2002 Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod
Model Overview

Itís time to challenge the senses and the status quo. The newest offering from Harley-Davidson is poised to trounce all previous conceptions of not only a Harley-Davidson custom, but custom motorcycles in general. It is a statement drenched in pure American muscle, deeply rooted in Harley-Davidsonís passion for raw power and decades of racing heritage. Itís a bold new beginning, combining aggressive energy with pure Harley-Davidson style. This is the first member of a new family of performance custom motorcycles. This is the V-Rod.

Overlook the long, lean lines of the anodized aluminum V-Rod for a moment and listen to the sound emanating from its soul. The aptly named Revolutionô engine combines a host of technical traits including liquid-cooling, 60-degree geometry and dual overhead cams with dramatic jewel-like styling that one could only expect from Harley-Davidson.

Inspired by the VR 1000 Superbike race program and developed by Harley-Davidsonís Powertrain Engineering team, the Revolution spins its one-piece forged crankshaft with side-by-side rods featuring automotive-style full pressure bearing journals with amazing results. Displacing 1130cc, the Revolution pounds out an impressive claimed 115hp at 8,250 rpm.

Dual overhead cams driven by hydraulically tensioned chains deliver incredibly accurate valve train performance and drive the high flow four-valve heads. Feeding the need is electronic sequential port fuel injection, as forged pistons draw fuel charge and air through a new downdraft air intake system while high-energy plug top ignition coils initiate combustion.

Cooling the Revolution engine is Harley-Davidsonís first widely acceptable street use of liquid-cooling. The highly efficient system delivers optimum temperature control without sacrificing styling. Such attention to style detail is evident by a form-friendly, yet functional polymer shroud and unique water pump placement. Aiding the system are twin cooling fans, which further enhance the high performance capabilities of the V-Rod.

A combination of rubber mounting and an internal counter balancer isolates the Revolution from the frame and delivers silky smooth power to an all-new transmission. The five-speed transmission utilizes a combination of spur and helical gears to deliver smooth, short-throw shifting, minimal noise and incredible durability. A wet sump oil pump means there is no external tank and a new, rare earth magnetic charging system delivers more lighting power in a compact size. Finally, a stylized 2-1-2 exhaust system features large volume capacity for optimized performance, while still meeting noise requirements and delivering a distinct sound customers will love and onlookers will covet.

As the rumble of muscle reverberates within your soul, the flowing lines of the V-Rod beckon to your sense of sight. Harley-Davidsonís first perimeter frame design delivers a level of chassis rigidity and styling unlike any motorcycle in the world. As with any Harley-Davidson motorcycle, styling was a key element when developing the V-Rod. The exotic bends of the silver-dipped frame are achieved through a hydroform process and are accentuated by bolt-on lower frame rails. Tucked tightly inside the new frame, an under-seat fuel tank not only allows the V-Rod to express a more custom look, but keeps mass centralized for improved handling. The new frame supports a stretched 67.5-inch wheelbase and is slung low via a 34-degree rake and 38-degree fork angle. This off-set angle helps achieve the long and low custom look of the V-Rod while delivering a balance of high- and low-speed stability.
